An academic term (or "term") is part of an academic year, the time at which the educational institution organizes the class. The timetable adopted varies greatly.
- The quarter system divides the academic year into four periods, one per season, with attendance required in three quarters per year for a total of 32 to 36 weeks of teaching.
- The semester system divides the academic year into two equal lengths, with attendance required in both semesters being a total of 32 to 36 weeks of teaching. There is often an optional half summer session during one full semester.
- The trimester system divides the academic year into three periods of 14 to 16 weeks each, with attendance required in two trimesters per year, for a total of 28 to 32 weeks of teaching. Trimester evolved from the semester system in 1960 and was, therefore, compatible with it (ie only one semester abbreviated to 16-18 weeks to 14-16 weeks). Spring-summer trimester may be a full trimester or can be divided into spring and summer of different half trimesters or shorter sessions, where classes meet twice (or larger) to give the same instructions that will be received in the trimester full.
The word quadmester or quadrimester is sometimes used to mean either four months or (more commonly in the use of modern America) a quarter of a year. In countries such as Argentina, public universities divide the academic year into two quadrimesters (March-July and August-December).
In most countries, the academic year begins in late summer or early autumn and ends during the next spring or summer. In Northern Hemisphere countries, this means that the academic year runs from August, September, or October to May, June, or July. In the Southern Hemisphere states, the academic year is parallel to the calendar year, which runs from February or March to November or December. Summer may or may not be part of the term system.

Terminology
- Semester
- A semester (Latin: s? mestris , lit.Ã, 'of six months') has meant one of two academic terms, generally excluding summer or January, if any, and may be 12 to 20 weeks.
- Trimester
- A trimester (Latin: trimestris , lit.Ã, 'from three months') divide the academic year into three periods, separated by rest. In some jurisdictions, trimester is used in its original sense to show a quarter system (from three months to a quarter of a year), or variations.
- Quarter
- A quarter is an academic term of about 12 weeks. The academic year divided into sections allocates the same amount of time for the summer for autumn, winter, and spring. The terms quadmester and quadrimester are rarely used to describe systems of three or four terms. When US universities change credit transfers between semester/trimester and quarter system, 36 hour quarters translate into 24 semester hours (based on 2 / 3 conversion factors); conversely, 36 semester hours translates to 54 quarter of a clock (based on conversion factor 3 / 2 ).

Australia
In most of Australia, the primary and secondary school years last for about 200 days, from late January or early February to early or mid December, and are divided into four tribes:
- Term 1 begins in late January or early February and ends in late March or early April (often close to Easter).
- Term 2 begins in late April or early May and ends at the end of June.
- Term 3 starts in mid to late July and ends mid to late September.
- Term 4 begins in mid-October and ends earlier until mid-December.
Requirements 4 & amp; 1 (rolled) and 2 & amp; 3 each are usually considered 'summer' and 'winter' respectively for the purpose of sports participation and uniform standards. Australian states and territories vary their approach to Easter when determining dates for holidays at the end of Term 1.
The exact dates vary from year to year, as well as between states, and to public and private schools. In Tasmania up to and including 2012, the school year is divided into three tribes, the first of which is the longest and includes an extended Easter holiday (which is also the practice of mainland Australia until the mid-1980s). However, by 2013 Tasmania introduces a four-year year, to adjust to other countries. There is usually a break from two mid-semester weeks (ie after Term 1 and after Term 3) and a three-week pause in the middle of the year, though this may vary between jurisdictions. In 2000, due to the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, the state of New South Wales extended the gap after 3 to 3 weeks, compensating by reducing the mid-year to two-week pause.
Most Australian universities have two semesters a year, but Bond University, Deakin University, CQUniversity, Griffith University, and the University of Canberra have three trimesters. Unusually, Macquarie University officially uses the word "session" and CQUniversity uses the term "term" instead of "semester". Many universities offer short optional summer semesters. One of the latest innovations in higher education in Australia is the establishment of a full-time Open University Australia (formerly known as Open Learning Australia) that offers continuous learning opportunities from each study unit (called a program in North America) that can lead to a degree qualification.
Open Universities Australia operates four 13-week study periods each year. Because students are studying only part-time and off-campus, this learning period is quite easy with the existing university offerings based on the semester. In some cases, the term "semester" is referred to as the "Study Period", for example by Centrelink.
Austria
The Austrian school year for primary and secondary schools is divided into two tribes, first starting on the first Monday of September in the states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland and on the second Monday of September in Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Most schools have vacations between national holidays on October 26 and All Souls Day on November 2, but it is an unofficial holiday not observed by all schools in Austria. The Christmas holiday begins on December 24 and ends on the first business day after January 6th. The first term ended in Vienna and Lower Austria on the first Friday of February, in Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg on the second Friday of February and in Upper Austria and Styria on the third Friday of February.
There's a one-week break between the two terms. In the second term there is the Easter holidays, Mayday Holiday on May 1 and the long weekend of Pentecost, Ascension and Corpus Christi. The school year ends in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland on the last Friday of June, in Upper Austria, Stiria, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg on the first Friday of July.
Barbados
The Barbadian school year was established after the British system, and thus, followed the scheduling of the three terms per school year.
- The first term begins in the second week of September and continues for 15 weeks, ending in mid-December, excluding one week for mid-term breaks in mid-October.
- The second term begins in the first week of January and continues for 12 weeks, ending in late March.
- The third term begins mid-April and continues for 11 weeks until the end of June.
The school holiday period is 9 to 10 weeks from the end of June to the first week of September.
Brazil
In Brazil, due to Brazil's Law of Referrals and Education Bases, the academic year should have 200 days, both at school and university. The school year usually starts during the first week of February. There is a winter break for 2 weeks/4 weeks in July. The Brazilian school year ends the first week of December, summer in Brazil.
Most schools use a 4 term system, called "Unidades" (unities) .
At the university of Brazil, the academic term is defined as the period or semester ( perÃÆ'odo , semestre ). The majority of academic degree programs are 8 semesters (four years) long or 10 semesters (five years).
Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, kindergartens, elementary schools and schools follow the semester system. Most universities follow the semester system though for some specific subjects such as Law, they follow the annual system. Business schools from all public and private universities follow the semester or trimester system.
Some universities use a two-semester system (using the terms "Term 1" and "Term 2") include: Jessore University of Science and Technology, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, University Chittagong International Islam, Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. Jagannath University, and Sylhet Agriculture University.
Some universities follow the trimester system (using "Spring", "Summer" and "Fall" designations) include: International University of America - Bangladesh, BRAC University, University of East West, Daffodil International University, North University of North, Presidential College, Stamford University , Institute of Military Science and Technology, University of Information Technology and Science, University of Alternative Development (UODA) and United International University.
Belgium
In Belgium, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools begin on September 1 and end on June 30.
School also rest/vacation:

Universities and colleges in Belgium use a semester system, dividing the academic year in two equal parts from fourteen weeks of coursework. The university started the first half of the third week of September, and there was no 'autumn break'. Colleges started a week earlier, in the second week of September, giving them the right to 'autumn break' a week. After 13 weeks of courses, the 'Christmas Holiday' begins (around December 20th), which is used to study for 3-4 weeks of exams in January.
After this exam, the university has a one-week holiday, called 'semestrial getaway', while college starts the second semester class at the end of January, soon after the exam, which this week they get back with 'spring break' in late February, which is not owned university. The university started the second semester in early February.
Both universities and colleges have 'Easter breaks', which are again used to study for exams in June. After Easter, classes begin again until the end of May, followed by four weeks of exams in June, after which three months of vacation are given. Students who fail to miss some courses in their curriculum in January and June, called 'first session', have to take another test in the second session at the end of August.
Cambodia
In Cambodia, the kindergarten sector of the school year in public schools consists of 10 months with two-month vacations, while in the primary and secondary sectors, divided into two semesters and each semester is divided into 2 quarters. The first of November is the beginning of the academic term. After the 1st semester, a small holiday when school is terminated and at the end of the Second Semester, the holidays are 2 months until the beginning of the new year. At university, it is divided into 4 years.
Canada
Education is the responsibility of the province, there is no Canadian national standard. In Canada the primary and secondary school year is 178 to 200 days, depending on the jurisdiction, but a few days can be deducted from this amount for professional development and administrative tasks, resulting in approximately 187 teaching days per year for most jurisdictions. Elementary students receive about 950 hours of teaching and high school students receive about 1,000 hours per year.
Generally in Canadian English, high school runs a two-semester arrangement, also known as the fall and spring semester, the first half starts from the day after Labor Day in September to mid January and the second runs from early February to Thursday before the last Friday in June. The semesters are often divided into two terms each. Some schools in Canada run a trimester system, the first run from September to January, the second from January to March or April, and the third from March or April to June. Trimester is more common in primary and secondary schools (TK - Grade 8) than in high school (Grade 9 - Grade 12). Most of these characteristics differ in QuÃÆ' Â © bec, where education is, with the exception of some school boards, which are given in French. With tradition, primary and secondary schools Quebec and Franco-Ontarian will arrange a schedule to ensure the school year ends before June 24, the date of the celebration of the day of St-Jean-Baptiste, a traditional holiday.
Most universities and colleges usually operate from early September to late April or early May. Often, this winter session is divided into two periods running September to December and January through April. Various forms of summer study may be offered May to August. Some, such as Waterloo University and Simon Fraser University, run a full tri-semester system, providing full courses during the summer. There are several school boards in Canada that experiment with schools throughout the year.
Chile
In primary school, high school, as well as in university, education Chile is divided into two semesters. The first begins in late February or early March and lasts until the end of June and the second begins in early August and ends in mid-December; Also, some universities offer summer periods from early January to mid February but only for exceptional programs. These seminars have a break for public celebrations, such as Easter (about a week in April), independence warning (one or two weeks in September) and some public holidays like weekdays, among others.
China
In the People's Republic of China all schools including elementary, middle and high schools, colleges and universities have two semesters, the first from September to January, and the second from February or March, depending on Chinese New Year's date, until July.
From January to February or March is the Winter or Lunar New Year holiday. Summer vacation usually from July to the end of August.
In North China, winter holidays are longer and summer vacations are shorter; vice versa applies in South China.
There are several holiday vacations:

Czech Republic
In elementary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic, the school year usually runs from September 1 to June 30 of the following year.
It is divided into two semesters with a break on a public holiday such as St. Vaclav (28 September), Independence Day (October 28, two days break), Velvet Revolution (17 November), Christmas (7-10 rest days), Spring break, Easter (three days break on Thursday White, Good Friday and Easter Monday) and finally Labor Day (May 1) and Liberation Day (May 8). After the end of the school year on June 30, the Summer holiday will follow until September 1, when the school year begins. The single exception to this is the final year in high school, which ends with Graduation students at the end of May.
The university has two intermediate terms. The academic year usually begins in the second half of September or in October. (It depends on the university.) Undergraduate degree is usually obtained by students after 3 years and a master after 2 years of study. However, there are some exceptions (eg Drugs take 6 years, no undergraduate degree).
Denmark
In schools in Denmark, the school year runs from August to June. At the university, the academic year runs from about 1 September to 30 June, and is often divided into fall semesters (with January set aside for exams) and spring semester (with June set aside for exams). Since 2004, several Danish universities and faculty divide the academic year into four quarters, each consisting of eight weeks and one week of exams, and separated from the next quarter with a one-week break.
Estonian

Christmas Break Christmas Break starts Saturday before Christmas.
Winter Holiday Season The Winter Holiday Dates dates are different from Academy locations, which can be in Zone A, B or C, to avoid high traffic on the road. It usually starts in February, ending late February or early March.
Easter Break Easter Break depends on the location of Academia. It starts in April, and ends late April or early May.
End of Academic term - Summer Break In primary school, the end of the term Acamedic is the beginning of July. In high school (high school or high school) the end of the Academic Period is before the Secondary School Examination at the end of June, or Baccalaureat, in mid-June.
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, students have one full teaching day from about 8:30 am until about 4:30 am. On Wednesday morning, some students may have additional classes. French students usually attend school on Saturday, but the so-called "four-day week" has been implemented since September 2008, reducing the school year from 936 to 864 hours (above the European average of 800 hours, but below the British minimum of 950 hours for public school). Additional holidays include Veterans Day on November 11, May 8, Day of Ascension, May Day on May 1st, and Easter Monday.
German
School
The school year in Germany begins between the end of July and early September, and ends from mid-June to July, with the same summer holidays as those in the UK (only 6 weeks) but much shorter than in some other countries (up by 3 month). Summer vacation starts in a different week by country (there are 16 states including Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen). The school year includes four or five shorter breaks or vacations:
- Christmas Vacation : Two weeks around Christmas and New Year
- Winter Break : One week or two weeks (only in some states, some days in some other) February or early March. Called Carnival Breaks if they start at Carnival on Monday.
- Easter : Two weeks in March/April
- Whitsun Break : A week or two around Whitsun
- Summer Break : Six weeks, probably starting as early as mid-June (then school starts again in late July in this state) or until the end of July (then school starts again only in early September at the state). In Halligen (tidal islands in the North Sea), summer vacation is five weeks.
- Autumn : One week or two weeks in October/November.
Due to the German federal structure, all breaks may differ depending on the country. The exact dates for the start and end of school holidays are kept differently by state and are changed annually. This is meant to keep the holiday traffic as low as possible.
The school year is divided into two parts (September to February & February to July). There is no need for a break between the two sections, but students get a semi-annual school report (showing only their current levels and irrelevant for promotion).
University
German universities run two semesters with start and end dates depending on the university. The Wintersemester (WiSe), where most students start university, often goes from 1 October to 31 March, with lectures starting around 15 October and lasting 14 weeks. There is usually a two-week break around Christmas and New Year (which is not counted in 14 weeks). The Sommersemester (SoSe) consequently usually goes from 1 April to 30 September with lectures starting sometime after Easter and lasting 12 weeks. Two free periods of classes between 12 to 14 weeks between semesters are to take exams, undertake internships, practicum courses, and employment.
The University of Mannheim changed its schedule to conform to US standards in the fall of 2006. The current semester is from 1 August to 31 January ( Herbst-/Wintersemester ) and from 1 February to 31 July ( FrÃÆ'¼hjahrs-/Sommersemester ).
University of Applied Sciences
"Fachhochschulen" started the second semester a month earlier than other universities.
University-cooperative university
"Berufsakademien" has four quarters, January to March and so on. In alternating quarters students attend university and internship in employer (the last being "Praxisphase"). The number of lessons per week is significantly higher than in an ordinary university (equivalent to full time employment) and the exam can not be during "free time" that year, because the time is spent in the company. Vacation is provided under labor law, which is half of 20-30 days (because only half a year is successful).
Guyana
The school year in Guyana usually begins in September and ends in July of the following year. It has three terms: Christmas (First), Easter (Second) and August (Third), with a two to three week break for Christmas and Easter and 6 to 7 weeks during the August period.
Honduras
The school year in Honduras lasts from the first week of February to the end of November, with a one-week break during Easter, and a week's rest in October. University Depending on the university, some do trimester and others in quarters. Rest can vary.
Hong Kong

For high school students, they usually start their academic year from mid-August or late August. Some high schools have two terms, but most have three terms. For universities and other tertiary institutions, the academic year usually runs from September or October to April or May, sometimes with an extra summer time around May to July.
Kindergartens often operate a semester system (two runs), divided by long pauses (eg two weeks) for Chinese New Year, usually in early February.
Hungarian
In primary and secondary schools in Hungary, the school year usually runs from September 1 to June 15 of the following year, with variations if this date falls on Saturday or Sunday. The school year (tanÃÆ' Â © v) is usually divided into two semesters (fÃÆ' Â © lÃÆ' Â © v) . The semesters are also divided, with some schools holding exams every half term. The first semester runs from September 1 to mid January and is divided by fall holidays, which is around All Saints Day and lasts for a week. The second semester closes at the end of the school year. It is divided by Easter holidays, which usually consist of the weekend before Easter and the holiday itself. Apart from these holidays and national celebrations, some schools have a 'ski vacation' (sÃÆ'szÃÆ'¼net) , dates varying from mid-January to February, although some schools hold them back in December. The length also varies from one school to another. It was made for the school students who participated in the school ski camp to avoid the verification of absenteeism. In the last academic year of secondary education, the Matura exam (exams leaving school and entrance exams for university admissions, similar to the A-level exam in the UK) is conducted from May to July.
The University of Hungary runs two semesters. They are usually from the first or second week of September to mid December (fall semester (? Szi fÃÆ'Ã… © lÃÆ'Â © v)) and from February to mid May (spring semester (tavaszi fÃÆ'Ã… © lÃÆ'Â © v)). Both semesters are followed by the examination period. During the winter exam period, a 1-2 week break is given between Christmas and the beginning of the new year. In addition to a break between semesters in summer, there are usually pauses including Christmas and New Year. Some universities also experience the fall and Easter holidays.
India
In elementary and secondary schools, school years in some sections are April to March and others from June to May, while at the University from July to May. There is a mid-year break during the summer, usually from late May to early July at the University and in primary and secondary schools, the holidays range from early April and last until early or mid-June. There is also a two week winter vacation at the beginning of the year. However, in the Eastern and Southern states such as West Bengal and Karnataka there will be two breaks, one for Dasara in September/October for 15 days and another for Christmas in December ranging from 7 to 15 days. The semester system is being applied in most universities in India as directed by the University Grant Commission.
University of Calicut, Kerala University, MG University and Sri Sankara University (SCSVMV University) have reached a consensus and other universities also tend to introduce a Kerala-based credit semester system. The University of Delhi also introduced this system.
For Jammu and Kashmir, the school year usually begins in mid-October or early November. There are two vacations a year, winter breaks from early December to early March. Summer vacations usually last two weeks from mid-July to late July, the dates vary. For schools, students move from year old to new academic year as soon as the exam for the previous year ends with a small break a week for compilation of results.
Most schools also have autumn holidays or Diwali in August or around October/November. This is generally just before the second semester exam in September or in the second half of the semester.
Indonesia
One academic year in Indonesia is divided into two tribes, running from mid July to December and January to mid-June. For universities, however, the term is much shorter, running from September to December and February to May. Some universities provide summer semesters (called short semesters ) from June to August. During the reign of Abdurrahman Wahid, schools closed for Ramadan and a week after Idul Fitri (Eid al-Fitr). Some schools apply Saturday-off. Previously, the academic year started from January to December, but this rule changed in 1985.
Iran
In Iran, the academic year runs from September to June (10 months). Some universities, however, offer a limited number of courses in the summer. Students have a three month summer vacation. All schools are closed during Nowruz from March 20 to early April to celebrate Iran's new year. The first semester (autumn) begins on the first day of the Persian calendar month in the same month as the first day of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and ends in January. The second half (spring) begins in winter and ends in June. There is no medium-term break in the academic calendar.
Republic of Ireland
The elementary school year runs from the beginning of September to the end of June. There are breaks for Christmas and Easter and two mid-term breaks in late October and mid-February. The middle school runs from September to the end of May, but because of the Junior Certificate and Certificate of Graduation exam, the 3rd and 6th years respectively break at the end of June for the summer break after the completion of the exam which ends on the 3rd week of June. The academic year for schools in public admission takes at least 167 days of teaching in high school and 183 days in primary school. Third-level institutions run a much shorter calendar, generally from mid to late September, sometimes early October, to December for their first term. The second term usually runs from January to mid or late May with a break for Easter for up to a month.
Israel
Public education
The school year in Israel begins at elementary, secondary and high school on September 1, and runs until the end of June for elementary school, and until June 20 for middle and high schools. There are no fixed holidays of the same length, with breaks that occur on national holidays, usually lasting two or three days. For the Jews, there are nine rest days for Sukkot (autumn); a seven-day break for Hannukah (in December); and for a Passover (spring) break is 2-3 weeks. For the Muslim population, a break is taken for Eid al-Adha, Eid ul-Fitr and the final break of the semester.
The university's academic year is usually divided into two semesters starting after Sukkot (usually mid to late October) and ending in June or July. Some academic institutions also allow the third semester in the summer.
Short break:
- Idul Fitri: the end of Ramadan, breaks three to five days, according to the lunar calendar (only in Islamic schools).
- Eid ul-Adha: the end of Hajj, a four-day break, according to the lunar calendar (only in Islamic schools).
- Rosh Hashanah: three days of rest; a break between the 4th and 6th of October.
- Yom Kippur: a two-day break; lag time between 13 September and 15 October (see note below from 2012).
- Sukkot: breaks nine days in late September or in October.
- Purim: a three-day break, a break in late February or early March.
- Yom Ha'atzmaut: rest one day, rest in late April or early May. The day before, Yom Hazikaron, was a half day.
- Lag BaOmer: one day break, rest in early May or mid-May.
- Shavuot: a three-day break, a break in late May or early June.
The school year in Israel is divided into two semesters:
- Semester 1 : From September 1 to the end of January or early February.
- Semester 2 : From late January or early February to late June.
Until 2011 the summer holidays ended on August 31, but in 2011 the Israeli education ministry decided to shorten the summer holiday one week and the break now ends on August 26 in 2012. In 2014, the old schedule is restored so that the summer break is back to 31 August. The period between Yom Kippur and Sukkot is added as a holiday to compensate for this but by 2014, the result has been removed.
Yeshivas
In most Yeshiva, the year is divided into three periods (terms) called zmanim . Elul zman starts from the beginning of the month of Hebrew Elul and extends to the end of Yom Kippur. It is the shortest (about six weeks), but the most intense semester as it comes before the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Zman winter starts after Sukkot and lasts until before Passover, the duration of five months (six years Jewish leap). The summer semester begins after Passover and lasts until mid-month Tammuz or Tisha B'Av, duration of about three months. During the interim period, called bein hazmanim (between terms), students are on vacation.
Italy
In Italy, all schools begin in the first half of September, although the exact start date changes each year. For schools from primary to high school, the academic year is divided into two semesters:
- First half : from September to February;
- Second semester : from February to early June.
Kindergarten is usually following the same schedule.
The academic year of the university is slightly different because of the exam. The academic year of the university is divided into:
- First half : from early October to late February. Some courses begin in early September. Throughout January and February, there is usually no lesson, just a test.
- Second semester : from early March to late July. Throughout the second half of May and June and July, there is also no lesson in most universities, only exams.
Although September is a free month, it is officially a test at all universities in Italy. That means it is possible to take the exam. During each test session (January-February, May-June-July or September), students are normally allowed to take any exams from previous operators that they can not pass and even certain tests of the new academic year (credit limit for last option this).
Public holidays
On the next holiday, there is no lesson:
- Carnival (especially Mardi Gras) - usually in February;
- Easter - dates change every year, usually in March or April and lasts 5-7 days;
- Liberation Memorial - on 25 April;
- Labor Day - on May 1st;
- Anniversario della Repubblica (Republican Warning) - on 2 June;
- Tutti i Santi (All Saints) - on November 1st;
- Immacolata concezione (Immaculate Conception) - on December 8;
- Christmas, New Year's Eve and Epiphany - from 23 December to 6 January (included)
Japanese
In Japan, most schools run a three-semester school year (trimester system), and most universities and colleges have a semester system. The exact dates from the start of the summer vacation and their duration vary throughout the region, but generally the break lasts for about six weeks. Rest came to avoid the heat in summer, elementary, middle, and high school in Hokkaid? and Nagano Prefecture tend to have shorter summer vacations than other schools in Japan.
School Hour 1: April 1 through July
School Period 2: early September to late December (with a two week break for New Year at the end of the year.)
School Period 3: start of January to end of March (and short spring break.)
The graduation ceremony takes place in March, and the registration ceremony in early April. The Japanese public school year consists of about 200 days.

Schools can be released from the opening of the required half-day amount in some cases, such as in Christchurch in 2011 when many schools were closed up to one month after the Christchurch earthquake of 2011. The break between terms has fixed start and end dates, and the rest period is set at two weeks.

Palestine
Philippines
Primary Education
The school year of the Philippines usually lasts between nine and ten months, and one school year must be at least 200 days as prescribed by law including the period of examination. The school year begins in the first week of June and ends in the third or fourth week of March. Private schools may have a slightly shorter academic calendar either starting in the second (or third week) of June or ending earlier in March.
In most primary and junior secondary schools, the academic year is usually divided into sections for the purpose of checking and reporting values although some private schools adopt a trimestral system. Each quarter usually lasts for about seven (usually the 3rd quarter) to ten weeks (usually quarter 1, 2 and 4) but the actual length of each quarter and the month they cover varies between private schools. The fourth quarter for pupils in grade 6 is usually two to three weeks shorter than the student to allow for final grade preparation to determine who is eligible for graduation as well as to prepare for the graduation ceremony itself. Each quarter culminates in most schools with a three to three-day examination period.
The academic term for high school (grades 11 and 12) operates on a semantic basis. Semestral, Christmas, and summer vacations are scheduled at the same time as elementary and junior high school. The 12th grader has a second semester shorter than the 11th grade for the school to prepare for graduation.
In most schools, summer vacations usually last for two months, starting from the first week of April to the last week of May. Most schools end the school year before Holy Week. Semestral breaks are usually set to coincide with All Saints and All Souls Day. Christmas holidays usually start in the third week of December, and classes continue Monday or Sunday after New Year's Day (except Monday is January 2). The launch ceremony is often held in late March or early April.
An exception to this general timetable is an international school operating in the country, which usually follows the school system of their respective country of origin.
Higher Education
For most universities and colleges, the academic year is divided into two semesters, each up to 18 weeks long except for senior students in their final semester where they ended the previous two semesters of the week. Registration/registration at an institution is usually good for only one semester: a student who successfully enrolls for the first semester is not automatically enrolled for study in the second semester. Students will need to successfully complete the permit requirements and in some cases, maintain a certain overall mark for progress in their university studies in the next semester. The first semester is followed by a break of two to four weeks before the second semester, called Semestral Break, which usually occurs between the second week of October through the second week of November for all universities and colleges. The Semestral Break can take two to three weeks, and usually includes All Saints 'and All Souls' holidays.
Other schools such as the Philippine University of Technology - Taguig Campus, De La Salle University and Far Eastern University - East Asia College, and AMA Computer University operate under the trimestral system. Classes begin in the fourth week of May and end in the third week of April. Under this system, students are usually able to complete their academic studies a year earlier than those from other universities with semantic programs. MapÃÆ'ºa University began using the quarterly system by eleven weeks for a period after the acquisition by the Yuchengco Group. This allows their engineering program to be completed a year before school runs on a seminary schedule.
In addition, from the academic year 2014-2015, the constituent campuses in the University of the Philippines System begin their school year in August until the end of May and the University of Santo Tomas starts the Academic Year in August and ends in May 2015. In AY 2015 -2016, some Philippine colleges and universities will follow this change.
In AY 2015-2016, San Beda College Manila and St. Scholastica's College Manila will start their calendar in early July 2015 and will end in mid to late April 2016 and it aims to be a transition to a full August-May Calendar in subsequent academic years.
Also in AY 2015-2016, University of Santo Tomas, will complete its shift to the August to May calendar. Ateneo de Manila University will also switch to the August to May AY 2015-2016 Calendar by having a summer period in June to July before AY 2015-2016 begins. De La Salle University and De La Salle - College of St. Benilde will have August to August Calendar for the upcoming 2015-2016 AY.
