character study is a drawing or painting of a human body created in preparation for a more organized or finished work; or learning drawing and painting techniques in general and the human figure in particular. With preference, character studies are conducted from the life model, but may also include the use of other references and artist's imagination. The living model may be dressed, or naked, but usually naked for students' work to study human anatomy.

Related terms in the statue are maquette, small-scale model or rough draft of the proposed work. Images may also be preparations for sculpture work.

Preparatory studies may be compositions, representing the entire proposed work, or perhaps just certain details, such as hands and feet. The study may be completed in a relatively short time frame, or very detailed depending on the preferred method of the artist. Images can concentrate on shape and shape, while studies in painting media are about color and lighting.

The term image study is sometimes used in photography, but it does not appear to be clearly defined as distinct from nude photography in general, given the nature of the medium that is inherently resolved. Photographic students can do work for educational purposes, and an artist can take a photo with the intention of using it as a reference for painting, but the term nudity study or nudy study is usually not limited to photos preparation or education. This usage probably began in the 19th century, when some photographers called their naked pictures "study for artists" just to avoid censorship.

Education

Starting from the Renaissance depicting the figure of life has been considered the best way to learn how to draw, and the practice has been preserved to this day. Different drawing and exercise techniques have become standard, including gestures, contours, and bulk images. For beginners, first learning to draw, learning to observe real objects correctly is important to learn the three dimensional perspective and lighting effects. The life model is preferred but if not available, the cast casts from the image can be used, never the photo.

Open image group

Experienced artists continue to practice drawing long figures after their formal education is over by attending informal groups without instructions that meet, often weekly, to share the cost of hiring a model. Known by various names, such as sketch groups, picture sessions, etc.; the format is similar to the early or intermediate drawing class, into three total clocks that begin with a number of moves and proceed to a slightly longer pose, but rarely more than 20 minutes each, just enough time to learn. Such open-drawing groups can be found in many local residents in the United States, and in other countries that share the tradition of Western study.
