character study is a drawing or painting of a human body created in preparation for a more organized or finished work; or learning drawing and painting techniques in general and the human figure in particular. With preference, character studies are conducted from the life model, but may also include the use of other references and artist's imagination. The living model may be dressed, or naked, but usually naked for students' work to study human anatomy.

Preparatory studies may be compositions, representing the entire proposed work, or perhaps just certain details, such as hands and feet. The study may be completed in a relatively short time frame, or very detailed depending on the preferred method of the artist. Such open-drawing groups can be found in many local residents in the United States, and in other countries that share the tradition of Western study.
