Preface is a short (usually short) piece of writing that is sometimes placed at the beginning of a book or other literary work. Usually written by someone other than the main author of the work, he often tells of some interactions between the introductory author and the main author of the book or story told by the book. Subsequent editions of the book sometimes have new introductions added (appearing before the older preface if any), which might explain in what way the edition differs from the previous edition.

When written by the author, the introductory may include the story of how the book came into being or how the idea for the book was developed, and may include thanks and thanks to those who helped the author during the time of writing. Unlike the preface, the preface is always signed.

Information that is important to the main text is generally placed in a set of explanatory notes, or perhaps in the introduction, not in the preface or introduction.

Pages containing preface and introduction (and other frontal materials) are usually not numbered as part of the main job, which usually uses Arabic numerals. If the front material is fenced off, it uses small Roman numerals. If there is a preface and a preface, the preface comes first; both appear before the introduction, which may be fused with the front material or the main text.

The introduction was first used around the middle of the seventeenth century, originally as a term in philology. That may be a German phrase Vorwort , is itself a Latin phrase praefatio .
