Jazz dance is a technique and style of dance performances that emerged in America at the beginning of the 20th century. Jazz dance begins as an African American social dance rooted in African slave dance. Over time, a clearly defined jazz genre emerged, transformed from street dance into a theater dance performed on stage due to the work of artists such as Jack Cole (choreographer), Bob Fosse, Eugene Louis Faccuito and Gus Giordano.

History

The term was first used to describe the dance performed on new jazz music in the early 20th century, but its origins lie in the dance brought from Africa by slaves sent to America. At that time, this refers to any dance performed for jazz, which includes tap dan jitterbug dance. The decisive feature is "free conversation style like improvisation."

From the early 1920s, ballet connected to both, jazz and dance, when the term 'jazz ballet' spread throughout the world. It was practically the beginning of the new jazz jazz "non-jazz". That is followed by modern dance-based efforts to define "modern jazz dance" without any real connection to authentic jazz dance forms. These efforts are called collectively "modern jazz dance" in the late 1950s. "Modern jazz dance" was defined in the late 1960s.

During this time, choreographers from other genres experimented with style, including George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jack Cole, Just Holm, Helen Tamiris, Michael Kidd, Jerome Robbins, and Bob Fosse. All these choreographers influence jazz by requiring highly trained dancers and introducing the steps of contemporary ballet and dance. In the 1950s, jazz dance was heavily influenced by the influence of Caribbean and Latin America, introduced by Katherine Dunham.
