The Gardener Master Program (also known as the Master Extension Gardener Program) is a voluntary program that trains individuals in the science and art of gardening. The first Gardener Master Program was established in 1973 by the Washington State University Cooperative Extension in the greater Seattle area to meet the high demand for horticultural and urban gardening advice. The first trial clinic was held at Tacoma Mall in 1972. When it worked, the Master Gardener Program was formally established, the curriculum was created, and the training began at King County and Pierce County in 1973. The concept then spread to other US states. and the Canadian province.
In the US, the group is affiliated with a land grant university and one of the cooperative extension service offices. The Canadian Master Gardener group has different organizational structures, including incorporation as a non-profit organization (Ontario) and university (Saskatchewan.) Typically, Master Gardeners receives extensive training and then provides information to the public via telephone or email helplines, speaking at events public. , writing articles for publications and the internet, and partnering with other community programs, gardens, and educational facilities.
Master Gardeners is active in all 50 states in the United States and eight provinces in Canada. According to the 2009 Master Gardener Survey, there are nearly 95,000 active Master Gardeners, which provide approximately 5,000,000 hours of volunteer service per year to their communities. Once volunteers are accepted into the Master's Gardener program, they are trained by extension cooperatives, universities, and local industry specialists in subjects such as taxonomy, plant pathology, soil health, entomology, cultural growth requirements, sustainable gardening, wildlife disruptive management, and integration of pest management.
After completing the training, the main gardener serves their community by providing guidance to others and nurturing historic communities and gardens. Awards are regularly presented to master gardeners for community service, innovative programs, and other topics.
