Histori
Lawrence Herkimer, a world-renowned cheerleader innovator, founded the NCA in 1948. The NCA is the first cheerleading company to host camps and clinics inviting cheerleaders and dancers from around the country to learn new tricks and improve their techniques under supervision of trained and qualified instructors. The NCA always incorporates dance into its program, allowing dance, pom-poms, or training teams to study with cheerleaders. In 1976, the company made a distinction between cheerleader and dance by creating NCA Superstar as a dance part of the company. The NCA Superstar eventually changed its name to the National Dance Alliance in 1999. The National Dance Alliance brand was established and is now a "full service provider in the dance industry".
The NCA and NDA are both part of Varsity Spirit Corporation, an organization that hosts competitions, offers camps and clinics to train dancers and cheerleaders, and sells cheer and dance outfits.

Camp
The National Dance Association extends invitations to high school and college dance teams from all over the country to attend summer or autumn camps. Many of these camps are held in campuses, hotels, and convention centers. Teams attending NDA camps are evaluated and receive personal feedback from NDA staff members. These camps are meant to prepare the team for the upcoming season. NDA offers three different camp types the dance team can choose from including overnight camps, day camps, and home camps.
Overnight camps are three or four day sessions available to teams at all different technical levels. All overnight camps NDA offers classes that benefit all levels of training, including beginners, intermediate, advanced, and elite. An overnight camp gives participants the opportunity to audition to become All-American Dancers. Participants selected to become All-American Dancers are given the opportunity to attend many special event events organized by NCA and NDA across the country.
The NDA day camps are two, three, or four-day sessions for teams who are unable to attend the camp yesterday and instead want to attend a camp where they do not spend the night. The refugee camp consists of the same curriculum as the NDA's overnight camp; however, the class was held from 9am to 5pm, after which the participants were asked to go home. Classes are offered in all dance styles for all levels. Dancers also qualify for an audition to become an All-American Dancer in NDA day camps.
Refugee camps are available for teams who prefer to work privately with trained NDA instructors in the privacy of their own schools. This option allows the team to have a personalized teaching atmosphere that focuses on the team's specific needs. The home camps give coaches the opportunity to create their own camp schedule that best fits their team. Trainers can choose from a variety of engineering classes, choreography classes in various styles, and team building exercises for their teams to participate. Dancers may also be selected to audition for All-American Team Members.
Competition
The National Dance Alliance provides an opportunity for dance teams to compete with each other on the NDA Classic Championships or Nationals. Invitations to compete in this competition are extended to school and college dance teams, as well as the All-Star dance team. The competition is divided based on whether the dance team is at the college level, the school, or all the stars. Each year, the NCA/NDA manages about 40 local, regional and national competitions nationwide.
Citizens
To compete in the National competition, the NDA College Rule Book for College Teams states that teams must qualify in NDA Summer or Autumn Camps, Regional or Classical competitions, or with video submissions. At the college level, teams can be offered bids for the National Competition based on team participation, behavior, and achievements at the camp.
Classic/Regional Championships
NDA offers high school and high school dance teams an opportunity to compete in their classic or regional championships. This competition allows teams to compete with other dance teams in their region. Compared to national championships, classic and regional competition is cheaper and allows you to stay close to home. Competing in any of these types of competitions can also qualify teams to compete in the NDA National Championships.
