In basketball, general violations are the least class of illegal acts. This is when every passing pass is made in half the court line when other players from the same team are still on the opposite side of the half court line. Most offenses are committed by teams with possession of the ball, when a player wrongly handles the ball or performs an illegal act. The general penalty for the offense is the loss of the ball to another team. This is one kind of turn.

Wikipedia has the following article about violations:

  • Breach handling violation:
    • Backcourt violation (Over and back)
    • Bringing
    • Double-dop
    • Traveling
  • Excess time taken:
    • Defensive three-second defensive (Illegal Defense) (punished as a technical offense)
    • Five-second rule
    • Breaking of the shooting clock, and the corresponding deadline to reach the frontcourt (violation of 8- or 10 sec)
    • Three-second rule (Traffic violation)
  • Other violations:
    • Interference cart
    • Goaltending

Stepping out of bounds and throwing balls out of bounds can also be considered offense resulting in a loss of the ball.

Stories involving contact between opponents or unsportsmanlike behavior are called offenses, usually personal offenses.
