The Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) is an annual road cycling tour across the state of Georgia. It started in 1980 as a branch of RAGBRAI. Between 1,000 and 2,000 riders participate in this great voyage every year.

This route covers about 400 miles for 7 days with options for longer distances. Mid-week, a two-night stay in one city allows the rider to rest or ride a century with a smaller mile selection. Break stops every 8-15 miles and snacks and drinks are provided for registered riders.

Histori

BRAG was originally called Georgia State Annual Bicycling Event (GASBE) when it first started in 1980. The chief leader on the idea for this event was Dot Moss. The inspiration originally came from a bike tour in Iowa called RAGBRAI (Register's Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa). The first journey begins in Savannah, Georgia, and finishes in Columbus, Georgia. The trip was a total of 300 miles. In 1985, the travel name was changed to Bicycle Ride Across in Georgia or BRAG.

Training

For BRAG, many riders started practicing in January. Bobby Rone, the BRAG cyclist, made the following suggestions:

  • Beginning in January, try riding once a week if the weather is above 45 degrees.
  • Do a short loop first - 10 to 15 miles.
  • After warmer times and weather changes begin in April, try up 20 or 30 miles, 3 or 4 days a week.
  • Try to achieve the same amount of driving intensity, compared to the distance of the vehicle.
  • At the end of May, around Anniversary, every journey should be 60 to 70 miles away.

Rone said that after following his training strategy, BRAG's trip "is very easy and fun."

Trace

BRAG volunteers choose the route every year and when the time comes, they help paint the arrows and other lines on the sidewalk. They also post BRAG signs to help motorcyclists out. Volunteers also do pre-biking to make sure this is a good route for cyclists from all directions. When registration papers and fees are collected for each rider, the envelopes are sent back to the rider, with information about the journey and the exact distance and directions for each turn. For example, an instructional package might say something like this, "Start a serious 1.2 mile climb..." They are made easy to follow.

Riders on the Trail

Everyone has their own reasons to use BRAG. Many trips to stay in shape, many trips to achieve personal goals or solve personal challenges, many trips to have fun with family and/or friends, or alone, as a hobby. And the others go up to enjoy the scenery, the different terrain, and the new country. At BRAG, almost all riders believe that this is more about travel, than purpose. Riders can choose to complete as much or as little of the tour as they want. This means each rider can travel a different distance for a week. On average, each rider travels between 43 and 100 miles a day. Every day the riding has been mapped and planned so that the rider knows where to go and what kind of trips are ahead for each day. When the trip for the day is over, the cyclists stop in town or city, and set up camp at the local high school. In the evenings, cyclists can relax or enjoy entertainment and tourism for the rest of the night. If the rider wants to get out, the shuttle provides transportation between campsites and tourist attractions around the city. At campsites, motorists may choose to set up tents outside, in tents, on the ground - most likely soccer or football fields, or inside the gym. In the morning, most riders start riding early to avoid the heat. Most of the routes are back roads with beautiful scenery and little traffic. BRAG's official rest stops at 10 to 15 miles apart and provides drinks and snacks for the rider. Organizers suggest that motorists do not stop for more than 5 minutes to avoid the difficulty of restarting that may be derived from lactic acid. Cyclists can not take the heat (average temperature is usually about 90 degrees Fahrenheit) or can not climb up the hill can be picked up by the carts supporting BRAG. Those who can not ride for a few days can also use the support trains to transport them, their bikes, and, gear to the next stop on the route if necessary. Riders can buy a meal ticket plan for a week. Cyclists can choose how much food they want in their plans. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available. According to Fitz Miller, "The food is good to extraordinary and the price is very affordable."
