Difficulty level ( DD , sometimes called rate or class ) is a concept used in some sports and other competitions for shows technical difficulties in skills, performance, or courses, often as factors in the assessment. Sports that combine measures of difficulty levels including bouldering, cross-country skiing, diving, equestrianism, figure skating, free-style skiing, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, surfing, swimming and synchronized trampolines. The degree of difficulty is usually an objective measure, in a sport whose judgment may also depend on a subjective assessment of performance. In the video game, "difficulty" often does not refer to how difficult the game is in general, but rather to the game setting, which is often chosen by players on the menu or at the beginning of the game.

The International Swimming Federation calculates the dive difficulty level by the five-part formula, combining altitude, number of heads and turns, positions, approaches, and entry.

Gymnastics

The International Gymnastics Federation provides A, B, C, D, E, F, or G difficulty skills. The difficulty level is also enhanced by linking joint skills in combination.

Trampoline

The International Gymnastics Federation provides difficulty points for the number of somersaults, the number of body twists and body positions on a somersault (piked or straight). Total for routines is the sum of each element.

In the video game

In the video game, "difficulty" often does not refer to how difficult the game is in general, but rather to the game setting, which is often chosen by players on the menu or at the beginning of the game. Sometimes, difficulty is set for the whole game, sometimes it can be changed during the game. In many video games, the difficulty mode is run on a general scale:

  • It's easy (sometimes known as "beginner", "beginner", "base", etc.)
  • Easy
  • Normal (sometimes known as "medium," "medium", etc.)
  • Difficult
  • Very difficult (sometimes known as "hardcore", "nightmare", "extreme", "impossible" etc.)

Many video games use this variation as a game mode.
