Oriented mountain bike ( MTB-O or MTBO ) is a racing endurance sport orienteering on mountain bikes where navigation is done along lanes and tracks. Compared with foot orienteering, competitors are usually not allowed to leave traces and track networks. Navigation tactics are similar to ski-orienteering, where the main focus is route selection when navigating. The main difference compared to ski-orienteering is that navigation is done at higher speeds, because the bikes can reach higher speeds. When the biker reaches a higher speed, the map reading becomes more challenging.

Equipment

The type of bike selected is a strong mountain bike intended for cross country cycling, but all types of bikes can be used. Depending on the type of terrain either a tailed mountain hard disk or full suspension is more appropriate. Clipless pedals with special cycling shoes are mostly used by serious cyclists to allow maximum power output, and keep the feet safe on the pedals. A bicycle helmet is usually a requirement in the competition.

Custom tools

A binder holder attached to the bicycle handlebar is an essential part of the equipment in the mountain bike orienteering, and most holders allow maps to be rotated. Brands known to map holders are Mapdec, Miry, Devotech, Nordenmark, Autopilot, and Windchill. Many riders also use some type of cable with a spring mechanism to pull the cord back after being used for their electronic time chips. Compass can be used but electronic navigation aid (such as GPS-based watch) is not allowed. Competitors can carry repair tools and spare parts during the race.

Map

Maps are usually of a smaller scale (1:10 000 - 1: 30 000) and are less detailed than standard orienteering maps. Lines and tracks are marked on a mountain bike orienteering map based on their ride difficulties, with four classifications: easy, slow, difficult and impossible to ride. Also, the barriers that require dropping are usually marked on the map.
