Priority openings , often abbreviated A or Av (for opening values ââ ) on the camera mode button, is the setting on some cameras that allows the user to set a specific aperture value (f-number) while the camera chooses the shutter speed to match it which will produce the correct exposure based on the lighting conditions as measured by the camera light meter. This differs from manual mode, where the user has to decide both values, the shutter priority in which the user chooses the shutter speed with the camera choosing the appropriate aperture, or the program mode where the camera selects both.

Usage
Depth of field
Because the depth of the field image is inversely proportional to the size of the lens aperture, the aperture priority mode is often used to allow the photographer to control the object's focus within the frame. Priority aperture is therefore useful in landscape photography, for example, where it may be desirable that the objects in the foreground, medium range, and background are all given crisply, while the shutter speed is immaterial. To obtain this large depth of field, a narrow aperture (identified by f-number high , eg f/16 or f/22) is required. The aperture priority mode also finds use in portrait photography, where the aperture is wide (identified by a low number, eg f/1.4 or f/2.8) and therefore a smaller depth of field may be desirable to throw the background rear does not focus and make it less disturbing.
Shutter speed
Another use of aperture priority mode is to indirectly affect the shutter speed for the desired effect. In landscape photography, the user may choose a small gap when shooting waterfalls, so the camera will choose a slow shutter speed (to allow sufficient amount of light to reach the film or sensor for proper exposure), thus causing water to blur through the frame. When shooting portraits in dim lighting, photographers may choose to open the lens to their maximum aperture in the hope of getting enough light for a good exposure while maintaining the shortest possible shutter speed to reduce blur.
