Plot

And Mulligan (Mark Ruffalo) is a former record label executive living in New York City who is estranged from his wife Miriam (Catherine Keener) and struggles to keep up with the music industry. After being fired from his job, he goes for a drink that takes him to a bar on the Lower East Side where he meets Gretta James (Keira Knightley). Gretta is a very young and independent songwriter who just broke up with her old boyfriend and songwriter Dave Kohl (Adam Levine), a successful new musician who had an affair with one of his producer assistants. Fascinated by Gretta's music, Dan offered him to sign him to a record label before, and although initially he refused to reconsider the offer and agreed.

Dan and Gretta meet with Saul, Dan's business partner and co-founder of their record label, but he does not see the same potential at Gretta and make it leave. Undeterred, Dan proposes that he and Gretta produce their own albums together, to be recorded live over the summer at various public locations around New York City. Recruited a team of talented musicians, including Steve, Dan set out to make an album worthy of being published by his label. During this time, Dan and Gretta tied in personally and professionally, and Gretta took teenage daughter Dan Violet, a novice guitarist, under her wing and encouraged her to play on the album.

When Gretta saw Dave receiving the award on television, he criticized him for selling to the music industry and, with the help of his best friend Steve, he expressed his complaint with him in a song he recorded on his ballot. The regretful Dave, who returned to New York to promote his new album, returned his call and asked to see it. After some consideration, he decides to meet him and they criticize their respective albums. Gretta feels betrayed by Dave's highly commercialized appearance of "Lost Stars," a love ballad he once wrote and composed for him as a Christmas present, believing that the true meaning of the song has been lost. Dave tells him that viewers like when he plays it in a new way, and that their energy fills the room. He believes that music is about sharing with people, but Gretta tells him that that's not what he meant for the song. However, Dave invited him to come and hear him play a song at the Gramercy Theater that weekend so he could see the impact on his fans.

When the album is over, Dan and Gretta meet again with Saul, who is very impressed with their collaboration. Gretta demands that Saul give Dan his job back and give him a bigger part in the deal. They leave without reaching an agreement, but Dan is confident that Saul will eventually sign Gretta to the label. Later, after receiving a text message from Dave that reminded him of his concert and much consideration, Gretta arrived just in time to watch Dave play the original setting of the song, but when he saw him play and see the reaction from the audience. for the song and how Dave responded to fan adoration by tucking the commercialized song, he realized that he was the missing cause. Gretta then left the concert and cycled through the city with a newly discovered closure and a new smile on her face.

After that, Gretta visits Dan in his apartment as he prepares to return home, after redeeming his mistake with his wife. She tells him that she does not want her to release her album, instead preferring to distribute it online for $ 1. Although Dan returns to work with Saul, she agrees to let Gretta release the album online and help her promote the release. The next day, Saul jokes fire Dan to promote Gretta's album and tells him that it sold 10,000 copies on the first day of release.

Production

Director John Carney composed the premise for Start Again a few years before he started writing scenarios in 2010. His story was partly inspired by his own experience as a musician in a band, and from his impression of artist and repertoire (A & R) executive record label during the 1990s, which became the basis of Dan's character. Carney wrote the script, originally titled Can the Song Save Your Life? , before him, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing songs; he wanted to "work the music around the story, instead of the other way around." The script style to perform the song as a natural element of the story was inspired by Judy Garland's 1959 musical film A Star Is Born, and was also used in the earlier Carney movie Once in ( Once (2007). Carney first aired the film in 2010 for filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the film with Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose production company Exclusive Media financed the $ 8 million film budget.

Before casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considers casting pop singers such as Adele in the lead role, as well as a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who at one point attached to the project. Knightley, who has never sung professionally before, is ready for the role by coaching with vocal coaches and learning how to play the guitar. Mark Ruffalo was Carney's first choice for Dan's role, and agreed to star in the film after Carney sent him the first draft of the screenplay. Singer Adam Levine was also the only person who considered Carney as Dave, and won the role after talking to Carney via Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition; he refused to be paid to appear in the movie. Although she had small acting parts on television before, Begin Again marked her first role in a movie. Carney approached James Corden to appear in the film after admiring the performance of Corden in a leading role in the production of Broadway One Man, Two Guvnors.

The subject of film photography begins in New York City on July 2, 2012, and lasts for 23 days. Carney chose to film in a lesser known neighborhood of Manhattan that would be more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations include Greenwich Village, East Village, Times Square and Washington Square Park. Rather than performing live performances during the filming, the actors sing for previously recorded tracks. To save money on renting crew and extra extras, some scenes - including one in Times Square - were shot late at night with hand-held cameras. The rooftop location near the Empire State Building is located at 28 W 36th St.

Carney's critique of Knightley

During a series of interviews to promote his movie Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley for his acting in Begin Again. When asked about the critical reaction to Singles by The Independent, Carney replied that "it's a small private movie without Keira Knightleys in it. It's really useful." In the same interview Carney also referred her repeatedly as a model, despite the fact that Knightley has worked professionally as an actress since childhood, saying "I will never make a movie with a supermodel again." He also criticized him in an interview with Heyuguys.com, saying, "I just think with Keira it's like asking him to do something he can not do." Although he did not specifically name Knightley, he, in an interview with Den of Geek, said that his desire to make Sing Street come from his "working experience, let's face it, with a model in my last movie ". Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who have worked with Knightley in other films, tweeted their support for her after Carney's comment.

Carney then tweeted a public apology saying she felt like a "complete idiot" and said that Knightley was "nothing but professional and dedicated" during the filming.

"At Metacritic, the film scores 62 out of 100, based on reviews from 39 critics, showing" profitable ".

Ian Freer of Empire rewards this film four out of five stars, describing it as "beautiful, winning, open, and guaranteed to smile on a comfortable summer night." In a review for Variety , Peter Debruge wrote that "Gregg Alexander music is the best thing" about the movie, which "puts emotion on the phone and then pushes them home with music." Similarly, AO Scott from The New York Times writes that Starts Again is "a disappointing, overproduced follow-up" to Once
