Reception

Eric Reeve, writing in Genetical Research, describes volumes as a "very odd booklet," the goal being to "introduce non-scientists into the intricacies, joys and threats of modern genetics," which do not would surprise him, "if it becomes a cult book in a small way."

"A small number of texts are heavily fragmented by Steve Jones," blackmailed, according to Reeve, "into small sections on most pages," "tend to have no continuity and consist primarily of small nuggets of genetic knowledge that would give readers a very simple about the subject, "although he admits," some impressive phrases may be embedded in the mind [the reader] for use at parties. "

"[T] he's a prominent image of Van Loon," Reeve argued, while "clever, often humorous," apparently intended for, "entered in many games of words and jokes," and "totally not designed," fill in the gaps in the education of the reader, "meaning that they," make very little contribution to the knowledge of the reader, and in many cases will mislead or confuse him. "

"[T] his book is an important missed opportunity," as Reeve concludes, "Steve Jones has a chance to produce a basic book that will fire readers who ask for further efforts in self-education rather than let them just admire the clever images and laugh at jokes. "

Borin van Loon, volume illustrator, has responded to Reeve's criticism by stating that, "We are not convinced that [Reeve] is quite 'getting' the idea of a documentary comic book."
