J. R. Hartley is a fictional character in popular ads promoting the British Yellow Pages, first shown in 1983 when British Telecom was privatized.

Plot
The ad shows an old man (played by Norman Lumsden) who asks at some used bookstores for " Fly Fishing by J.Ã, R.Ã, Hartley". No bookstore has it, and he goes home sadly. Her daughter, sympathetic, gave her the Yellow Pages; and one of the stores he owns has a copy of it. He was happy. The unknown asker asked for his name and he responded with a speed of dictation: 'My name? Oh, yes, this is J.Ã, R.Ã, Hartley. "The ads ended up promoting Yellow Pages, the voiceover provided by actor Joss Ackland.

Reception
In 2015, a poll was conducted to mark the 60th anniversary of Britain's first television commercial break. This ad is ranked fifth most popular with 7% of votes.
Legacy
Author Michael Russell wrote and published Fly Fishing: Memories of Angling Days, by JR Hartley in 1991. This book is a best seller and spawned two other best sellers under the pseudonym JR Hartley: JR Hartley Produce Again Memories of Angling Days (1992) and Golf by J. Hartley (1995). When Lumsden died on November 28, 2001 at the age of 95, the commercial was broadcast again in his memory, almost 20 years after his first appearance. In February 2011, Yellow Pages re-created the ad, with DJ Day V. Fiction Lately looking for a copy of its Pulse and Thunder brake trance, which was released for sale at the same time.
