Microsoft Office 2007 (code-named Office 12 ) is a version of Microsoft Office, a family of office suites and productivity software for Windows, developed and published by Microsoft. It was released to manufacturing on November 3, 2006; it was then available to volume license customers on November 30, 2006, and then to retail on January 30, 2007, the same release date of each of Windows Vista. It was preceded by Office 2003 and replaced by Office 2010.

Office 2007 introduces a new graphical user interface called Current User Interface , which uses ribbons and Office menus instead of menu bars and toolbars. Office 2007 also introduced Office Open XML file formats as the default file formats in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. This new format is intended to facilitate information sharing among programs, improve security, reduce document size, and enable new recovery scenarios.

Office 2007 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1, or a newer operating system; this is the last version of Microsoft Office to run on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

Office 2007 includes new applications and server side tools, including Microsoft Office Groove, collaboration and communications suite for smaller businesses, originally developed by Groove Networks before being acquired by Microsoft in 2005. Also includes Office SharePoint Server 2007, a revision to the platform server for Office applications, which supports Excel Services, a client-server architecture to support Excel workbooks that are shared in real time between multiple machines, and can also be viewed and edited through web pages.

With Microsoft FrontPage discontinued, Microsoft SharePoint Designer, devoted to the development of the SharePoint portal, became part of the 2007 Office family. Its designer-oriented partner, Microsoft Expression Web, is targeted for general web development. However, no applications are included in the 2007 Office software.

The speech recognition function has been removed from each program in the 2007 Office suite, because Windows Speech Recognition is integrated into Windows Vista. Windows XP users must install earlier versions of Office to use the speech recognition feature.

According to Forrester Research, as of May 2010, Microsoft Office 2007 is used in 81% of companies surveyed (a sample of 115 North American and European companies and SMB decision makers).

Development

The first beta of Microsoft Office 2007, referred to as Beta-1 in an email sent to a small number of testers, was released on November 16, 2005. The Beta-1 Technical Seal was released to testers on March 13, 2006. Update Technical issues repaired while installing with Windows Vista build 5308.

Microsoft revealed the ribbon on March 9, 2006 at CeBIT in Germany.

Office 2007 Beta 2 was announced by Bill Gates in WinHEC 2006, and was initially released to the public at no cost from the Microsoft website. However, due to an unprecedented number of downloads, a $ 1.50 fee was introduced for each product downloaded after August 2, 2006. The beta version was updated on September 14, 2006 in Beta 2 Technical Refresh (Beta2TR). This includes an updated user interface, better accessibility support, enhanced platform robustness, and greater functionality.

The beta version continues to work in reduced functionality mode after February 1, 2007. If the user downloads a Technical Refresh to update Beta 2, then the user can use its full functionality until March 31, 2007 for client products and May 15, 2007 for the product server. The Beta program ended on November 8, 2006, when Microsoft announced its "Released to Manufacturing" (RTM) product and began manufacturing the final product. After RTM, the availability of the beta download expires.

Office 2007 was released to volume license customers on November 30, 2006, and to the general public on January 30, 2007.

Service plan

Since the initial release of Microsoft Office 2007, three service packs containing updates and additional features have been released. The 2007 Microsoft Office Service Pack is cumulative, so the previous Service Pack is not a prerequisite for installation.

Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1 was released on December 11, 2007. Official documentation claims that SP1 is not just a publicly released patch release, but also contains fixes for a total of 481 issues across the entire Office suite. Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2 was released on April 28, 2009. It added increased support for ODF, XPS and PDF standards, and included some bug fixes. Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 3 was released on October 25, 2011.

New features

User interface

The new user interface (UI), officially known as the Current User Interface , has been implemented in the core Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and in the inspector items used to create or edit each - items in Outlook. This app has been selected for UI improvements as they center around the author of the document. The rest of the apps in the suite are changed to the new UI in the next version. The default font used in this edition is Calibri. The original prototype of the new user interface was revealed at MIX 2008 in Las Vegas.

Office Button

The 2007 Office Button, located at the top left of the window, replaces the File menu and provides access to common functionality across all Office applications, including opening, saving, printing, and sharing files. It could also close the application. Users can also choose a color scheme for the interface. Important accessibility improvements are Office buttons following Fitts law.

Ribbon

The ribbon, the panel that stores the button settings and command icons, sets the command as a set of tabs , each grouping the relevant commands. The ribbon is present in Microsoft Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, Access 2007 and some windows Outlook 2007. The ribbon is not user-customizable in Office 2007. Each application has a different set of tabs that expose the functionality that the app offers. For example, while Excel has tabs for graphics capabilities, Word does not; instead of having tabs to control the formatting of text documents. Within each tab, various related options can be grouped together. Ribbons are designed to make application features more discoverable and accessible with fewer mouse clicks than the menu-based UI used before Office 2007. Moves the mouse scroll wheel when in one of the tabs on the ribbon cycle - through tabs. The tape can be minimized by double-clicking the active section title, such as the Home text in the image below. Office 2007 does not support the removal, modification or replacement of the tape. However, third-party add-ins can bring back menus and toolbars to Office 2007 or customize the ribbon commands. Add-ins that restore menu and toolbar include Classic Menu for Office, ToolbarToggle, and Ubuntu. Others like RibbonCustomizer allow customization of ribbons. Office 2010 does not allow customization of ribbons out of the box.

Contextual Tab

Some tabs, called Contextual Tab , appear only when certain objects are selected. The Contextual tab exposes custom functionality only for objects with focus. For example, selecting an image displays the Images tab, which gives you the option to handle the image. Similarly, the focus on the table shows the table related options in a particular tab. The Contextual tab remains hidden except when a valid object is selected.

Live Preview

Microsoft Office 2007 also introduces a feature called Live Preview , which temporarily applies formatting to text or focused objects when any formatting buttons are moused-over. Formatting is temporarily removed when the mouse pointer is moved from the button. This allows the user to have a preview of how the option will affect the appearance of the object, without actually applying it.

Mini Toolbar

The New Mini Toolbar is a small toolbar with basic formatting commands that appear in the document editing area, such as a context menu. When the mouse selects a section of text, the Mini Toolbar appears close to the selected text. Stay semi-transparent until the mouse pointer hovers over it, to avoid blocking what lies beneath it. Mini Toolbar can also be created to appear by right-clicking in the editing area or via ? The menu key on the keyboard, in this case appears near the cursor, above or below the traditional context menu. Mini Toolbar can not be customized in Office 2007, but can be turned off.

Quick Access Toolbar

The Quick Access toolbar (by default) sits in the title bar and serves as the most commonly used function store, such as saving, cancel/repeat and print. This can be customized, although this feature is limited, compared to the previous version of the toolbar in Office. Any commands available in all Office applications can be added to the Quick Access toolbar , including commands that are not available on the ribbon as well as the macros. Keyboard shortcuts for any of the commands on the toolbar are also fully customizable, similar to previous versions of Office.

Other UI features

  • Super-tooltips , or screentips, which can hold formatted text and even images, are used to provide detailed descriptions of what most buttons do.
  • The zoom slider is present in the bottom right corner, allowing dynamic and fast document magnification.
  • The status bar is fully customizable. Users can right-click the status bar and add or remove what they want from the status bar to display.

SmartArt

SmartArt, found under the Insert tab in the ribbon in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook, is a new group of editable and formatted diagrams. There are 115 SmartArt graphics layout templates that have been defined in categories such as lists, processes, cycles, and hierarchies. When an instance of SmartArt is inserted, a Text Pane appears next to it to guide the user through entering text in a hierarchical level. Each SmartArt chart, based on its design, maps the outline of the text, automatically resized to fit, to the graph. There are a number of "quick styles" for each graph that apply very different 3D effects to the graph, and image form and text can be formatted through the style and style of WordArt. In addition, SmartArt graphics change their colors, fonts, and effects to match the document theme.

File format

Office Office Open XML

Microsoft Office 2007 introduces a new file format, called Office Open XML, as the default file format. Such files are stored with extra X letters in their extensions (.docx/xlsx/pptx/etc.). However, it can still store documents in the old format, which is compatible with previous versions. Alternatively, Microsoft has provided a free add-on known as the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack that allows Office 2000, XP, and 2003 to open, edit, and save documents created in the newer 2007 format.

Office Open XML is based on XML and uses a ZIP file container. According to Microsoft, documents created in this format are up to 75% smaller than the same document stored with earlier Microsoft Office file formats, due to ZIP data compression.

Files containing macros are stored with an extra M in their extension instead (.docm/xlsm/pptm/etc.).

PDF

Initially, Microsoft promised to support exporting to Portable Document Format (PDF) in Office 2007. However, due to legal objections from Adobe Systems, Office 2007 initially did not offer PDF support out of the box, but as a separate free download. However, starting with Service Pack 2, Office allows users to export PDF files natively.

XPS

2007 Office documents can also be exported as XPS documents. This is part of Service Pack 2 and before that, available as a free plug-in in separate downloads.

OpenDocument

Microsoft supports open-source efforts to support OpenDocument in Office 2007, as well as previous versions (up to Office 2000), through add-in converters for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as command line utilities. In 2008, the project supports the conversion between the ODF file format and Office Open XML for all three applications. According to the ODF Alliance, this support fails and substantial improvements are still needed for interoperability in real-world situations. Third-party plugins that can read, edit, and save to Open ISO Document Format (ODF) are available as separate downloads.

Office 2007 Service Pack 2 adds native support for the OpenDocument Format. The ODF Alliance has released test results on Office 2007 SP2's ODF support, concluding that Office ODF support, both SP2 and other add-ons, has "serious drawbacks that are not addressed, will undermine open standards based on interoperability that markets, especially governments, demand". Specifically, SP2 does not have support for encrypted ODF files and has limited interoperability with other ODF spreadsheet implementations.

The OpenDocument Standard ISO/IEC 26300 specifies file encryption, which is based on sha1, Blowfish, and RFC 2898. Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 does not support reading and writing encrypted ODF files (password protected). The user is presented with the message: "can not use password protection using ODF format."

The ISO/IEC 26300 OpenDocument standard does not have spreadsheet formula languages included (or is referenced) in the standard specification. Office 2007 SP2 uses the spreadsheet formula language specified in the open ISO/IEC 29500 Open Office XML standard when creating ODF documents. According to the ODF Alliance report, "ODF spreadsheets created in Excel 2007 SP2 are actually not compliant with ODF 1.1 because Excel 2007 misunderstands formulas with cell addresses. Section 8.3.1 of ODF 1.1 says that addresses in the formula" start with "[" and terminated with "]". "In Excel 2007 the cell address is not enclosed in required square brackets." The ISO/IEC 26300 specification states that semantics and syntax depend on the namespace used, which is a dependent implementation, letting the syntax implementation be well defined.

Microsoft states that they are considering adding support for the official ODF formula (OpenFormula) language, once the upcoming version of the ISO/IEC 26300 standard specification includes one.

Microsoft ODF spreadsheet support in SP2 is not fully operable with other OpenDocument implementations, such as IBM Symphony, which uses non-standard OpenOffice.org 2.x language formula, and OpenOffice.org 3.x, which uses the OpenFormula draft. The company has previously reported that "where ODF 1.1 is ambiguous or incomplete, Office implementation can be guided by current practices in OpenOffice.org, especially, and other implementations including KOffice and AbiWord." Peter Amstein and the Microsoft Office team are reluctant to make liberal use of expansion mechanisms, although they are provided in ODF 1.1 They want to avoid all appearances from extending-hugging efforts. "

The EU is investigating Microsoft Office OpenDocument Format support to see if it gives consumers greater choice.

Metadata

In Office 2007, Microsoft introduced the Document Inspector , an integral metadata removal tool that truncates Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents such as author and comment and other "metadata" names.

User help system

In Microsoft Office 2007, Office Assistants has been removed for a new online help system. One feature is the extensive use of the Super Tooltips, which explains in one paragraph what each of the functions performs. Some of them also use diagrams or drawings. It appears and disappears like a normal tooltips, and replaces the normal tooltips in many areas. Content Help also directly integrates searching and viewing Office Online articles.

Collaboration features

SharePoint

Microsoft Office 2007 includes features geared for collaboration and data sharing. Thus, Microsoft Office 2007 displays server components for applications such as Excel, which work with SharePoint Services, to provide collaboration platforms. SharePoint works with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, which is used to host SharePoint sites, and uses IIS and ASP.NET 2.0. Excel server exposes Excel Services, allowing any worksheets created, edited and managed via a web browser. It features Excel Web Access , a client-side component used to create a spreadsheet in the browser, Excel Calculation Services which is a server-side component that fills in the worksheet with data and performs calculations, and Excel Web Services that extend Excel functionality to individual web services. SharePoint can also be used to host Word documents for collaborative editing, by sharing documents. SharePoint can also be used to hold PowerPoint slides in the Slide Library , where slides can be used as formatting templates. It also notifies the slide user automatically if the source slides are modified. Also by using SharePoint, PowerPoint can manage shared reviews of presentations. SharePoint-hosted documents can be accessed from apps that create documents or from other applications such as browsers or Microsoft Office Outlook.

Groove

Microsoft Office 2007 also includes Groove , which brings collaborative features to the peer-to-peer paradigm. Groove can host documents, including presentations, workbooks and more, created in Microsoft Office 2007 applications in shared workspaces, which can then be used in collaborative document editing. Groove can also be used in managing workspace sessions, including workspace access control. To collaborate on one or more documents, Workspace must be created, and then those who work on it must be invited. Any files shared in the workspace are automatically shared among all participants. The app also provides real-time messaging, including one-to-one messaging as well as group, and attendance features, and monitors workspace activities with warnings, which appear when a predefined set of events are detected. Groove also provides features for conflict resolution for conflicting edits. Schedule for collaboration can also be decided by using built-in shared calendars, which can also be used to track project progress. However, the calendar is not compatible with Microsoft Outlook.

Themes and Quick Styles

Microsoft Office 2007 put more emphasis on Document Themes and Quick Styles. The Document Theme defines colors, fonts and graphical effects for documents. Almost everything that can be inserted into the document is automatically organized to match the overall theme of the document that creates a consistent document design. Office file format The new theme (.THMX) is shared between Word email, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook email messages. A similar theme is also available for data reports in Access and Project or forms in Visio.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is a new addition to the Office suite, replacing the discontinued FrontPage for SharePoint users. People who do not use SharePoint can use Microsoft Expression Web

  • Support features and constructs that expose SharePoint functionality
  • Supports ASP.NET 2.0 and Windows Workflow Foundation
  • Support for creating workflows and data reports, from external data sources
  • Optionally render XML using XSLT

Criticism

Ribbon

Although ribbons can be hidden, PC World writes that the new "ribbon" interface snatches office workspaces, especially for notebook users. Others call it a big icon that distracts attention. In essence, the GUI interface-type of sharp contrasting ribbons with older menus arranged according to typical functions performed in paper-based offices: for example, the old File "menu" dealt with opening, (re-) naming, storing, and print files, and the old "Edit" menu deals with making changes to the file contents. As a result, users who are more familiar with the old menu logic will be somewhat frustrated with new ribbons that are more visually oriented. PC World has stated that an upgrade to Office 2007 poses a danger to certain data, such as templates, macros, and email messages. The ribbon can not be moved from top to side of the page, like a floating toolbar.

Some users with previous Microsoft Office experience complain about having to find features on the ribbon. Others claim that after learning to use the new interface, it has improved speed with a "professional looking" document that can be created. Microsoft has released a series of small programs, help sheets, videos, and add-ins to help users learn about the new interface faster.

Patenting controversy

Microsoft Contractor Mike Gunderloy left Microsoft partly because of his disagreement with the company's "land grab" including attempts to patent the ribbon interface. He said "Microsoft itself is a big threat to the future of software development through an increasing tendency to withstand competition through legal fraud." He said that by leaving Microsoft, he "no longer contributes to eventual death programming."

Office Open XML

The new XML-based document format file in Microsoft Office 2007 is not compatible with earlier versions of Microsoft Office unless the add-on is installed for older versions.

The Microsoft Word 2007 Equation Editor, which uses a form of MathML called Office MathML (OMML), is also not compatible with Microsoft Word 2003 and earlier versions. After converting the Microsoft Word 2007.docx file to a.doc file, the equation is shown as a graph. On June 6, 2007, Inera Inc. revealed that Science and Nature refused to accept the script prepared in Microsoft Word 2007.docx format; next Inera Inc. informs Microsoft that the Microsoft Word 2007 file format is damaging the usability for scientific publishing. On April 25, 2011 Nature still does not support Office Open XML format; Science However, accept this format but does not advocate its use.

Bibliography

The new Word 2007 feature for bibliography only supports a small number of fixed citation styles. Using XSLT, new styles can be added. Some extra styles, such as the Associated Standards publication format for Computing Machines, are made available for free by third parties.
