Beginner is a 2010 American romantic drama romantic comedy written and directed by Mike Mills. It tells the story of Oliver, a man who reflects on the life and death of his father, Hal, while trying to establish a new romantic relationship with a woman, Anna, dealing with his own father's problems. The film is based on real life coming out of Mills' father at age 75, five years before his death.
Beginners premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, in which the Los Angeles Times referred to it as "an engaging and heart-stirring film" with actors with a "strong sense of responsibility" to their colleagues in the real world. "Christopher Plummer received many awards, including the 2011 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for his performance.

Sinopsis
The film is organized as a series of interconnected flashbacks. After his father's death, Hal from cancer, Oliver reflects on their relationship for five years since the death of Oliver's mother, Georgia. Shortly after his death, Hal came to his son and began exploring life as an open gay man. She became active in the gay community, finding love with a much younger man and becoming more honest with herself and with her son. As a result, Oliver and Hal became closer during this time. Shortly after Hal's death, Oliver met Anna, a French actress, at a party. Inspired by his father's attitude towards the end of his life and their relationship, Oliver decides to pursue love with him.

Production
With cinematography by Kasper Tuxen, Beginners was filmed using Red One digital cameras. Most of the films are autobiographical, and are based on Mike Mills' experience after his own father came out of the closet after his mother's death.
The "Siedem Razy Kobieta" poster on the wall in Oliver's dining room is from the Polish version of Shirley MacLaine 1967 Woman Times Seven .
Reception
In the review of Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 84% based on 150 reviews, with an average rating of 7.3/10. The important consensus of the site reads, "Wearing his twee heart on his sleeve, Beginner explore the depths of modern and multi-generational romance with intelligence and depth. " At Metacritic, which gives a normalized ranking for review, the film holds an average score of 81 out of 100, based on 36 critics, showing "universal recognition".
Calvin Wilson from St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote, "A very unique comedy drama with its own rhythm." Diego Costa of Slant Magazine writes, "One of the most distinct pleasures of Starter is the way it unifies one's life fragment - maybe the filmmaker, though few do the trouble - with humility , and without competing for a complete whole. "Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly wrote," Darts movies, dreams, and sometimes seem to dance. For her performance, Christopher Plummer won the British Academy Film Award, the Denver Film Critics Society Award, Golden Globe, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, National Awards Council Award, Online Movie Critic Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award, all for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition, Plummer was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor and the film was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and won for Best Plummer. At the 84th Academy Awards, Plummer won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
