Waterhouse adds that the books "are widely distributed and can be viewed on the shelves of popular booksellers as well as in university libraries."

Kelsang Gyatso

To date, Tharpa has published 22 of his books, covering the whole range of Sutra teachings and the Shakyamuni Buddha Tantra. It is in the process of being translated into German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Dutch and Croatian. According to his website, "Tharpa publishes the works of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a contemporary Buddhist teacher who presents important Buddhist practices in a manner that is easily understood and practiced in modern day life." Biography Research Guide explains Kelsang Gyatso's books:

A monk and a Tibetan Buddhist scholar; Geshe Kelsang has authored twenty books aimed at providing Western Dharma practitioners with important Buddhist texts; some books for beginners like Transform Your Life and How to Solve our Human Problems , books on the Mahayana path like Universal Compassion (Lojong), and books on Vajrayana (Tantra) such as Mahamudra Tantra ; (born 1931, in Tibet).

A number of Kelsang Gyatso textbooks have received good reviews. Bluck wrote that "The three most popular works - Introduction to Buddhism , New Meditation Handbook and Transform Your Life - have sold 165,000 copies, among them , showing their appeal far beyond the movement itself. "Batchelor says that Kelsang Gyatso's books are written with" considerable clarity. " Braizer echoed this sentiment, saying that Kelsang wrote "extraordinary" books that are "an important contribution to Western understanding of Buddhism and its traditions, and they can stand on their own merits." The Guide to Dakini Land and Essence of Vajrayana has been described as "the most detailed commentary and reveals the practice of special tantras that have not been published in Western languages." In his book review of Guides to Dakini Land , Richard Guard says:

It is remarkable that the author has managed to give us so much information in just a few hundred pages. Editors should be praised for their skillful efforts in conveying Geshe Kelsang's instructions in a language so simple and precise... By making this book available to Vajrayogini practitioners, Geshe Kelsang has truly brought blessings in our lives.

These books are also highly thought out in the Tibetan establishment. Three of his published works contain preface from previous Ganden Tripa and the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama contributes the introduction to Buddhism in the Tibetan Tradition while Trijang Rinpoche and Ling Rinpoche (each holding the position of Ganden Tripa) also gave a preface to his books Meaning to be Witnessed i> (dedicated to Dalai Lama's longevity) and Clear Light of Bliss (dedicated to the last Trijang Rinpoche), respectively. Kyabje Ling Rinpoche refers to Kelsang Gyatso as "this most precious Spiritual Guide", while Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche refers to him as "an extraordinary magnate, a great Spiritual Master Kelsang Gyatso." Tsem Tulku praised Kelsang Gyatso and his publication: "The great master, Kadampa Geshe, Kelsang Gyatso, you can see very clearly his works, his centers, his books, the pure oaths, and the thousands of people he influences."

New Kadampa Tradition

The publication of Tharpa is part of the New Kadampa Tradition - the International Kadampa Buddhist Union, which is an international Buddhist charity set up to build a Buddhist temple for world peace in every major city in the world. Founded in 1985 in Ulverston, England and now has affiliates in countries around the world.

Je Tsongkhapa

The publication of Tharpa is devoted to the preservation of Je Tsongkhapa's tradition:

We are studying and practicing the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa and taking our example as Kadampa Lama and the ancient Geshe did. All the books I have written are comments on the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa. We try our best to follow the example of the ancient Kadampa tradition and use the Kadampa name to remind people to practice pure.

For example, the Joyful Path of Good Fortune is based on Je Tsongkhapa Lamrim Chenmo ( Great Exposition from Stage Path to Enlightenment) . Other examples include:

  • Universal Compassion is based on Je Tsongkhapa Sunrays of Training the Mind
  • Understanding the Mind is based on Je Tsongkhapa's teachings on Valid Cognition Comment by Dharmakirti
  • Guide to the Land of the Dakini and The essence of Vajrayana is based on Be dÃÆ'¶n kun sÃÆ'¤l ( Illuminate All Hidden Meanings ) and Je Tsongkhapa's comments to Heruka sadhana, DÃÆ'¶ jo ( Wishfulfilling )
  • Clear Light of Bliss is based on Five Stage Illuminated Lights
  • Tantric Grounds and Paths is based on Great Exposure to Secret Mantra Stages
  • Ocean of Nectar is based on Explanation of Intention: Broad Explanation of the Great Minutes 'Guide to the Middle Way'.
  • The New Meditation Handbook and Joyful Path of Good Fortune is based on Je Tsongkhapa's commentary on Lamrim Atisha's teachings.

Preserving the Gelugpa tradition

The teachings in the books of Tharpa are also in the flow of Gelugpa teachings Pabongka Rinpoche and Trijang Rinpoche. For example, the Joyful Path of Good Fortune is the modern version of Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand , written by Je Phabongkhapa and edited by Trijang Rinpoche; and the New Meditation Handbook is a brief translation of these teachings. In the preface Joyful Path the author writes:

I have accepted these teachings from my Spiritual Guide, Trijang Dorjechang, which is the emanation of Atisha; so the explanation given in this book, the Joyful Path of Good Fortune, is actually derived from him and not from myself.

Waterhouse notes that "All pictorial materials produced by HCVs are carefully controlled to maintain accuracy in the smallest detail":

A Bath printer that is responsible for the production of some of the latest publications of HCVs, told me that the movement's representatives are very particular about the reproduction of some illustrations in Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's , that the entire mold must be repeated because of the moon symbol has been omitted from one of the diagrams.

Use of Tharpa books about Buddhist courses around the world

Fourteen books published by the classic Tharpa Publications are used as the foundation of the New Kadampa Traditional Foundation and Teacher Training Program, which has tens of thousands of Buddhist students around the world. The Foundation's program is described by Steven Heine in Buddhism in the Modern World: Adaptation of the Ancient Tradition :

The Foundation's program is meant for serious students who want guided learning at a deeper level than they can get through a series of Lamrim negotiations, usually all of which correspond to a beginner's ability, which is usually the cost of Western Dharma centers.

The New Kadampa Traditional Teacher Training Program is a strict "multilayer education" study program of Sutra and Tantra Buddhism presented in the tradition of Tibetan Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419 AD) teacher, designed for the training as a Buddhist teacher.

Finance

Losing money every year since 1985 onwards, Tharpa Publications "broke out even" for the first time in 1996. Tharpa Publications claim that, since then, the author has donated all royalties from Tharpa books to non-profit organizations that promote Buddhism. First he gave this to Manjushri Institute:

Tharpa Publications publishes my books. They are financially independent from me and from all my Dharma Centers around the world. From the beginning I have given the royalty Manjushri Cultural Center that I am authorized to do. I never used a penny of this money.

Now Tharpa says that the author donated all the royalties to the International Temple Fund. Each book also contains the information: "The profit received by Tharpa Publications from the sale of this book will be donated to the International Temple of NKT Project" which is "a Buddhist Charity, Building for World Peace."
