Hand paddle - Wikipedia

A handbag is a device worn by swimmers during training. It consists of a plastic plate worn on the swimmer's sole and attached over the back of a swimmer's hand with an elastic strap. Plates are often hollow with hole patterns.

Handling the oars increases the durability of the hands as it tries to move through the water during the effective part of the arm movement - part of the stroke described as "pull". This gives the swimmer more forward impulse from the arm blows than the bare hands, and gives the kinesthetic "enhanced" feeling of attraction. It also enhances the swimmer's sense of "catch", the phase before the pull, where the hands change from a slender position to hold water and start pulling. If the hand catches or pulls at the wrong angle, the increased resistance afforded by the paddle will worsen the results while twisting, making the defect more apparent to the swimmer. The enormously increased loads worn by the oars on the arms and shoulders can, however, cause pain and increase the risk of injury, so the coach suggests only limited use of the paddle and the use is discontinued if the swimmer feels shoulder pain.

Rowing is often used by pulling buoys to build arm strength.
