In the Beginning: Biblical Stories ( ??????????? , Tezuka Osamu no Ky? yaku Seisho Monogatari , lit. Old Testament Story of Osamu Tezuka is serial anime television based on the Hebrew Bible Scriptures (Old Testament) made by Osamu Tezuka. The series is a joint production between Nippon TV, Tezuka Productions Tezuka, and an Italian government announcer, Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI). Although the series was in production for several years in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was not broadcast in Japan until 1997, on the WOWOW satellite channel. The series has also aired on TV in the United States (on Catholic-oriented Eternal Word Television Network), Italy, Spain, and Germany.

In the Beginning marks the fourth time the biblical story forms the basis of the Japanese animated television series, following two series of Superbooks and The Flying House, created for the Network Christian broadcasting Pat Robertson by Tatsunoko Production in the early 1980s.

At the beginning feature episodes are reserved for most of the major biblical stories of the Old Testament, including the stories of Creation, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark, Abraham and Isaac, Joseph, Moses, David, and Solomon, with the last episode showing the birth of Jesus Christ. Like the second series Superbook, several stories are repeated over several episodes. Unlike Superbook and The Flying House , however, no contemporary characters from modern times are included in the story, except for mascot and series of view characters, Roco foxes (which its appearance is removed in English rank).

Tezuka's manga work often includes religious themes, and because of his long-running manga, he is sometimes regarded as a devout Buddhist, but in fact, Tezuka is largely agnostic.

In the Beginning grew out of a request received by Osamu Tezuka from the Vatican through RAI in 1984, asking Tezuka to produce an animated version of the Old Testament. Tezuka spent two years working in a pilot film for a project based on the story of Noah's Ark, both writing scenarios for the film and working in the production of the animation itself. However, Tezuka died in 1989 before the film was completed. The rest of the production for the pilot film and the next 26 episode television series is overseen by director Osamu Dezaki.
