Plot
A frightened woman, Katie, fled from her Boston home, having already had a bloody knife. After taking refuge with a neighbor, he was at the bus station trying to escape from the city. He bought a bus ticket with his hair now cut and bleached and stopped in the small town of Southport, North Carolina. In the general store, he introduced himself as Katie Feldman. After getting a job as a maid, and renting a small house on the edge of town, Katie befriends her neighbor, Jo. He meets Alex Wheatley, a widowed father of two small children, Josh, who has a strained relationship with him, and Lexie, who operates a local public store. Alex immediately gave Katie a bike so she would not have to walk.
It was not long before Katie and Alex started a relationship, and she became like a mother to Josh and Lexie. Meanwhile, Kevin Tierney, Boston police detective, prepared a wanted poster for a woman named "Erin" who described that he was wanted for first-degree murder. Alex sees Erin's fugitive poster at the police station and sees it as having a striking resemblance to Katie. She faces Katie with information, causing a big fight. They broke up, and Katie moved out of her house.
Since Katie is about to leave town, Alex intercepts her and says that she has fallen in love with her. Katie returned her love, and decided to stay in Southport. She tells Alex that she fled to Southport to escape her rough and alcoholic husband. They quarreled, and he stabbed him in self-defense before he fled south.
Meanwhile, Kevin is suspended for making the desired poster, which he reveals that he is Katie's (rough) and alcoholic husband. Enraged, he bursts into the house of Katie's former neighbor in Boston and finds a phone number to the Southport restaurant where Katie works. Arriving just in time for the July 4th parade in town, Kevin is so drunk to see Katie kissing Alex, which makes her angry. That night, Katie dreamed that she was standing on the boat dock watching the fireworks when Jo showed up and told Katie that "she" was here. Katie wakes up at the convenience store next to the sleeping Lexie when Kevin suddenly shows up and confronts her, demanding that she come back with her. He refused and told him to leave. Kevin pulled a gun and poured gasoline all over the store, intending to burn it.
When she hesitated, Katie bought time by pretending to sympathize with him and agreeing to go home with her. When he let his guard down, he pushed him into the water; However, the sparks of fireworks landed on gasoline, triggering a fire that engulfed the shop. Alex saw a burning shop, quickly crossed the harbor by boat, and rescued Lexie. Meanwhile, Katie tries to fight Kevin; during the fight, the gun explodes and kills Kevin, removes him from him forever.
After the fire, Alex found several letters written by his late wife, Carly, before he died. The letters were prepared in advance for unforgettable events such as Josh's eighteenth birthday and Lexie's wedding day. Alex gave Katie a letter with the words "To Her" on the envelope; thank you letter receiver to make Alex happy. The letter attached was a photograph of the wife of the late Alex, whom Katie was surprised to learn that Jo was actually. This means Jo is Carly, in the form of an angel, who takes Katie to her husband, Alex.
