Inspiration and origin

Similar to the Warriors series, Seekers started as a request from HarperCollins to Victoria Holmes to develop another series about a group of animals, but not cats. Dogs are considered, but rejected because they are too close to the cat in their hierarchical social organization, packing and hunting lifestyles, and territories. It is disclosed by Victoria Holmes later in an online chat, in which he states that he "is reluctant to make a story that... will be very similar to Warriors. The dogs live in packages, they hunt their food, they have a strict hierarchy in the community they, they guard their territory ". Horses, beavers and dolphins are considered, but dismissed: Holmes feels that horses tend to flee rather than stay and fight, and that the battle of dolphins will be slow without "the excitement of all the actions Erin favored so much." In the end, the company abandoned the decision for Holmes and he chose the bear; in the author's chats later he notes that the bears "live more solitary lifestyles than cats, they are wild through and through without any domestication history (do bears do not count), and they are much larger animals, with lots more potential for fighting ". The series takes inspiration from Inuit's beliefs and Native American language. Holmes found that Native Americans and bears are closely related to the natural environment. The bear names are taken from several different native American languages. The day after day, for example, means "black" in Choctaw.

Holmes was inspired by the Inuit faith and the Native American languages spoken in the area where the bear lives. Holmes developed the power of Ujuark's shift shape after reading about the shamans, who could have turned into other animals. Holmes loves the idea and decides to have one of the same bears, allowing him to "infiltrate the human community without them guessing the truth." Then, Holmes "needs to establish what kind of belief each bear has," so after discovering that bears are closely related to their environment like Native Americans, Holmes concentrates his research around the Natives. The names of bears come from native American; Lusa means midnight or black in Choctaw, while Kallik means lightning in Inuktitut, Silaluk means storm in Inuktitut, Taqqiq means moon, Toklo means two in Chicksaw, and Ujurak means stone.

Themes

The main theme emphasized in the series is the environment. Holmes said that by "coming up with a series on different animals giving me the opportunity to explore some of the less-easy themes going into Warriors, especially the environment." Holmes says that he is always interested in recycling and saving the planet so he wants to explore how bears and other animals may react to humans that destroy their homes and habitats. Many reviewers have raised the theme. Publishers Weekly found that "readers will appreciate the bear struggle to survive, along with the Hunter environmental theme." List of books also commented on each story apart from the three touches mentioned on environmental issues and issues. School Library Journal notes that "Declining habitats" are very clear, and often throughout their journey, animals should avoid cars and people with weapons. â €

A review of Children's Literature raised the theme of the environment, but commented on themes such as "youth versus age, new versus traditions and the discovery that strangers are often not much different from oneself." This is also related to the theme of racism noted by the reviewer Kidreads.com. He notes that "[Hunter] also cleverly discussed the theme of racism through a unique and honest approach - three bears with different colors, different backgrounds and different beliefs turning to each other for survival and friendship. " Although the difference between the bears they are still working together.

Critical reception

Seekers have received generally positive reviews. Weekly Publishers praised the exciting end of the first book and the reader thought it would find a great interest in the bear struggle to survive. The Books List finds the first book plot that has "an interesting balance of funny anthropomorphic characterization and realistic attention to behavioral birth." The School Library Journal writes "from the first page, the story is interesting and refreshing" and "[t] its plot is fast, and the authors tend to create and maintain the adrenaline-charged mood of these children themselves." > Kirkus Review found that "Hunter creates a rich, sensual world filled with cruelty, beauty, gentleness, barbarity and just a legendary background enough to add to the mystery." However, reviewers also feel that too much detail goes into character development and setting and there is little plot. In the review for the second and third books, Horn Book Review feels that readers may experience confusion about the mountain, but they will still enjoy the fantasy adventure and animal description.
