HVAC, Adjust and Balancing Testing (TAB) are the three main steps used to achieve proper HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) operation. TAB usually refers to the construction of commercial buildings and specialized contractors that employ personnel who perform these services. In general, TAB specialists perform air and hydronic measurements on HVAC systems and adjust the flow required to achieve optimal performance of the building's environmental equipment. The balancing is usually based on the design flow value required by the Mechanical Engineer for the project, and the TAB contractor submits a written report that summarizes testing and balancing and notes any deficiencies found during TAB work. Ensure that your TAB contractor holds current professional certification. See NBC, AABC, NEBB, TABB, or NBCTA.

Test
Testing is the use of special and calibrated instruments to measure temperature, pressure, rotational speed, electrical characteristics, speed, and quantity of air and water for equipment evaluation and system performance.

Adjusting is the final arrangement of balancing devices such as silencers and valves, adjusting fan speed and pump impeller size, in addition to automatic control devices such as thermostats and pressure controllers to achieve maximum system performance and efficiency determined during normal operation.
Balancing
Balancing is a methodical arrangement of the flow of liquid systems (air or water) through the use of acceptable procedures to achieve desired or determined design airflow. When starting the system balance, you should find the terminal with the smallest number of streams in terms of drawing engineers. Once the "low" terminal has been found, you can proceed to adjust all the diffuser/grid (air) or the circuit equilibration valve (water) to proportionally match the original "low" terminal. There should be at least one wide-open terminal to achieve optimum efficiency.
