The Hanged Man (XII) is the twelfth card or Major Arcana card on most of the traditional Tarot decks. This is used in game play or in prediction.

It describes pittura infamante ( pronounced [pit'tu: ra i? Fa'mante] ), the image of a man hanged upside down by an ankle. This hanging method is a common penalty at the time of a traitor in Italy. However, the serious expression on his face has traditionally shown that he is there of his own accord, and the card is meant to represent self-sacrifice more than punishment or physical crime.

In another interpretation, The Hanged Man is a depiction of the Norse god, Odin, who hung herself from the tree to gain knowledge. There is also a Christian interpretation that describes Judas, and includes a silver bag in his hand.

Description

A 1393 decision for Milan and Lombardy about the penalty for a traitor: "Let him be the drug [dragged] on the board [wood] in the ponytail to the place of execution, and there is suspended by one foot to the gallows, and be left there until he dies As long as he let him be given food and drink. "

The modern version of the tarot deck depicts a man who was hung upside down on one leg. This figure is most often hanged from logs (like on a cross or gallows) or trees. Ambiguity results from the fact that the card itself can be seen upside down.

Dalam bukunya The Pictorial Key to the Tarot , A. E. Waite, perancang dek tarot Rider-Waite, menulis tentang simbol:

The poles that he hung form a Tau cross, while the figure - from the position of the foot - forms a fylfot cross. There is a nimbus about a martyr's apparently martyhead. It should be noted (1) that the sacrificial tree is a living wood, with leaves on it; (2) that the face expresses a deep position, not suffering; (3) that the figure, as a whole, shows life in suspension, but life and not death. [...] It has been called a martyr card, a card of wisdom, a card of Great Work, a task card [...] I will say very simply to my own part that it expresses a relationship, in one aspect, between the Divine and Universe.

There is a circle of light blazing around the head of a suspended person, indicating higher learning or enlightenment.
