Formation
Redeye was created in 1998 by a group of photographers who met in Manchester to discuss research on what the practitioners in the region need in relation to North Western Art. With many required facilities such as dark spaces, exhibition halls and legal aid assistance, they decided that most photographers need an environment where they can network and learn from each other. In early 1999 these meetings became orderly. Some groups, chaired by Len Grant, volunteer to help run the organization. The award-winning British photographer, Paul Hill, gave the first of six talks that launched Redeye events in October 1999. The first paid staff member was appointed in 2001, and a coordinator was elected the following year.

Nonprofit status
Redeye received funding support from the UK Art Council. In March 2011, they received funding for the next four years. It also has project funding from ACE, RALP, CIDS, AGMA and a number of other organizations.
In line with the manifesto, Redeye organizes events annually including yearly conversations by established photographers and workshops that run at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. Monthly portfolio consultation and monthly consultation sessions are held with experienced curators, image editors and photographers. Redeye also works in partnership with QUAD, Derby and The Buy Art Fair, which is held annually in Manchester. As a nonprofit organization, Redeye's goal is to see continuously what's happening in photography and provide activities to keep it healthy.
Project
National Photography Symposium
The National Photography Symposium was founded by Redeye in 2009. It has been described as "one of the must-attend photography events" by Pete Jenkins, NUJ. This is the weekend of talks, workshops and events held every year, and includes all kinds of photography from art, photojournalism, community, editorial and commercial to museums, galleries, higher education and libraries. The 2009 symposium begins with a strong keynote address by Francis Hodgson of the Financial Times.
