The burpee , or squat thrust , is a full body workout used in strength training and as aerobic exercise. The basic movement is done in four steps and is known as the "four-count burpee":

  1. Start in a standing position.
  2. Move into a squatting position with your hands on the ground. (count 1)
  3. Kick your foot back to the board position, as your arm is extended. (count 2)
  4. Immediately return your feet to the squatting position. (count 3)
  5. Stand from a squat position (count of 4)

Origin

The exercise was named in the 1930s for the American physiologist Royal H. Burpee, who developed the burpee test. He obtained his PhD degree in applied physiology from Columbia University in 1940, and created a "burpee" exercise as part of his PhD thesis as a quick and simple way to assess fitness. This exercise was popularized when the United States Armed Forces adopted it as a way to assess the fitness level of recruits when the US entered World War II. Comprised of a series of exercises conducted in rapid succession, the test is intended to be a rapid measure of agility, coordination and strength.

Progression

The way to do burpee as it was originally intended has evolved since the 1930s. The upper phase of the burpee is usually between the legs that land between the hands while still grounded, which creates unnecessary pressure on the lower back. It is now more common to land a foot on the outside of the hand.

Confusion

Burpee is sometimes confused with sprawl. A sprinkling is similar to a burpee with the main difference being that the hip comes to the ground.
